Paint Gunn HS

The Paint Gunn High School project was a participatory design process to refresh the exterior paint colors of the original drab brown buildings.  A series of student engagement exercises and complementary faculty/staff/parent surveys helped evaluate needs and outlined potential priorities for use of different paint colors on campus. For more details on the community input process and design inspirations, please visit: www.paintgunnhs.com.

Wildflower, the selected new exterior color scheme, was a palette of warm neutral tones and bright, soothing accent colors.  The colors were inspired by the floral and plant elements on campus and applied to the beams and doors of various building clusters to differentiate campus sections to provide wayfinding cues.  Pops of red highlighted social spaces on campus such as the cafeteria tables, main quad and courtyard benches.   Neutral colors were also inspired by the landscape, and selected to complement existing materials and structures that would remain untouched. The lightest shade brightened walkway ceilings and walls, and bounced light into the buildings. Medium tones highlighted strong mid-century architectural features of the original structures: beams, purlins, window panels, etc. Dark neutral accents further articulated building elements such as gutters, downspouts and window/door frames.
