Sensory Garden
In the hustle and bustle of a busy world, we are often assaulted by a barrage of offending sights, sounds, scents -- so we forget what sensory joy can be. For Palo Alto’s Code:ART Festival, the Sensory Garden transformed a gritty, narrow 8.5 foot wide alley into a place of serenity, wonder, and delight. An urban chandelier of dangling lights and a beautiful floral chalk mural visually lured visitors into the alley. As visitors progressed to the other side, footsteps triggered soothing, bell-like sounds from interactive sound harp lining the alley. Tactile floral displays situated in old phone booths offered a fun textural experience and further in, tastes of lemon verbena and scents of jasmine and gardenia enveloped visitors for a holistic sensory experience of delight and calm. In the evening, as dusk fell, the experience changed from sensory to magical as the twinkle of the lights glowed on.
