COMMUNITY DESIGN > Sustainable 60' Streets

As inspired by our Safer Streets = Slower Streets blog post, our community is filled with streets that have 60’ rights of way and 36’ wide car zones.  How can we retrofit and transform the typical 36' car zone from a speeding alley and parking lot into more sustainable, people-friendly streets, with slower design speeds (for cars) and bike infrastructure?  How about starting with these five steps?*
If we tried one step per year, in five years, we could change the design speeds for car travel on our streets, create an instant bike network, decrease the percentage of our streets dedicated to cars from 60% to 40%, and help reduce emissions and VMT!

It's 2018 now.  Can we create a whole network of Sustainable 60' Streets by 2023?

* Please also note these illustrations are meant to diagram how space could be allocated to different transportation modes, and should not be considered final street designs.
